Transition lenses, also known as photochromic lenses, are a popular choice for individuals seeking convenience and protection from changing light conditions. At RX Safety, we often receive inquiries about whether these lenses can be made darker. The answer is yes, but there are a few important considerations to keep in mind. In this article, weโll explore the different types of transition lenses available, how they can be made darker, and the limitations you should be aware of.
There are three main types of transition lenses available at RX Safety:
Transition Signature lenses are the most common type of photochromic lenses. They offer excellent clarity indoors and darken efficiently when exposed to UV light outdoors. These lenses are ideal for everyday use, providing a comfortable visual experience in various lighting conditions.
Transition XTRActive lenses are designed for those who spend more time outdoors and require extra protection from bright sunlight. These lenses are darker than the Signature lenses when fully activated, offering enhanced comfort and protection. They also have a slight tint indoors, which provides additional glare reduction.
Transition XTRActive Polarized lenses combine the benefits of the XTRActive lenses with polarization, which reduces glare from reflective surfaces such as water, snow, and glass. These lenses are perfect for outdoor enthusiasts who need maximum protection and visual clarity in bright conditions.
At RX Safety, we understand that some customers prefer their transition lenses to be darker than the standard options. There are a few methods to achieve this:
Adding a mirror coating to transition lenses can enhance their darkness. Mirror coatings reflect more light, reducing the amount that passes through the lens and giving a darker appearance. However, itโs important to note that mirror coatings can affect the way the lenses darken and may cause them to appear less clear in low-light conditions.
Another option is to tint the transition lenses. At RX Safety, we have successfully tinted transition lenses to achieve a slightly darker shade for our customers. However, this process has its limitations. Tinted transition lenses will not turn completely clear indoors; instead, they will transition to a light grey color. While this may be suitable for some users, itโs important to consider the trade-off in indoor clarity.
For those who need the darkest possible transition lenses, Drivewear lenses are an excellent choice. These lenses are specifically designed for driving and outdoor use, offering superior darkness and glare reduction. Drivewear lenses automatically adjust to changing light conditions, providing optimal vision and comfort even in the brightest environments.
Transition lenses offer a versatile solution for those who need adaptable eyewear for varying light conditions. While these lenses can be made darker through mirror coatings and tinting, itโs essential to understand the limitations and potential impact on indoor clarity. At RX Safety, we are committed to providing our customers with the best possible solutions for their eyewear needs. I have Ray-Ban frames with progressive transition lenses. I want them to be permanent sunglasses. Would like them to be light/medium gray indoors, then darker out in the sun. Would prefer a tint over mirror, but mirror would be okay if no other option is workable.
I am not 100% sure what your asking. I think you want us to tint you existing lenses darker. We may or may not be able to do that depending on the scatch coating you have on your glasses if it will accept a tint.
