The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can cause significant damage to your eyes, leading to conditions such as cataracts, macular degeneration, and even retinal damage. That’s why selecting sunglasses with proper UV protection is crucial. Whether you’re outdoors in bright sunlight or even on a cloudy day, UV rays can still harm your eyes, making it essential to wear UV-blocking sunglasses all year long.
When shopping for UV protection sunglasses, always check for sunglasses labeled as blocking 99-100% of UVA and UVB rays or offering UV absorption up to 400nm. This ensures your eyes are fully protected from harmful ultraviolet rays. Other important factors to consider include:
Larger frames or wrap-around styles shield your eyes from UV rays entering from the sides.
While lens color doesn’t determine UV protection, tints can improve contrast, reduce glare, and enhance comfort.
If you enjoy outdoor activities or sports, choosing the right sunglasses is essential for both protection and performance. Brands like WileyX and Spy Optics are known for their sporty designs and durable construction. Their wrap-around frames offer superior UV protection by minimizing light that enters from the sides, making them ideal for running, cycling, or other outdoor pursuits.
For those who engage in extreme sports or need eyewear for challenging environments, brands like WileyX, ESS, and Bobster offer tactical sunglasses designed to provide maximum protection and performance. These sunglasses are built to stay secure during high-intensity activities while offering complete UV protection, ensuring your eyes are safeguarded no matter the conditions.
Children’s eyes are particularly vulnerable to UV rays, as UV damage accumulates over time. That’s why it’s crucial to start protecting their eyes early. Designed to fit comfortably and securely, these sunglasses ensure your child’s eyes are shielded during outdoor activities.
In addition to UV protection, it’s important to choose sunglasses that fit properly for maximum comfort and coverage. A snug fit on the bridge of the nose and around the ears ensures they stay in place during activities. Oversized frames or wrap-around styles offer additional protection by blocking light from entering around the lenses.

I travel into the sun in my morning commute…at times I can’t see a thing …I need uva uvb and the ability to drive into that sunlight and see.?? any options for me
Hi Dave,
It would be best to purchase a pair of sunglasses with a polarized lens to aid in reducing the glare of the sun. If you purchase a pair made of a polycarbonate lens material, it will have a UV coating already instilled into the lens to filter out the UV rays.
